| I’m a green-machine! |
Getting your greens in college can be tough. Between classes, work and parties sometimes it’s easier to grab a pizza and cola on the go. A healthy alternative is to start making your own green smoothies! Packed with vitamins and nutrients they’ll keep you fuller longer and give you the energy you need to keep going throughout the day.
While a basic green smoothie will have two handfuls of a leafy green, 1 cup of liquid, 1 cup of ice and other fruit, when you first start making these it can be hard to experiment. I was terrified that the smoothie would taste like spinach! To help you out here are two of my tried and true recipes to get you started. Happy Blending!
2 cups of fresh spinach
1 banana, cut into fourths
1 handful of frozen berries
1 handful of ice
1 cup of vanilla almond (or soy) milk*
1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal
Directions:
Put everything but the ice in your blender and use the “mix” setting for 1 minute. Add the ice then “puree” for 1 minute. Enjoy!
*If you don’t have almond or soy milk on hand, use regular milk and add a teaspoon of vanilla
1 banana, cut into fourths
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter*
1 cup of vanilla almond milk
1 cup of ice
Directions:
Put all ingredients into blender and blend for 2 minutes. You may have to stop blending and scrape down the sides a few times; the peanut butter is sticky!
*Almond butter may be substituted for peanut butter
