Pop quiz time! What is the one thing you can buy that makes you richer? No, it’s not a trick question; there really is something that can make you rich besides money, and the answer is travel.

Getting away from everything familiar is one of the best ways to reinvigorate your soul and reignite your passion for life.  Being in the same place for too long can get stifling — even if that place is ridiculously beautiful and exciting.

I live in one of the most popular counties in the country, and all I want to do is leave. I was born and raised as a Southern California girl. In my heart, I will always be a SC girl, but there is so much more out there waiting to be seen. I daydream all the time about leaving home, getting on an airplane and never looking back. I think about the gorgeous and dramatic cliffs in Ireland, the warm sand and salty air in Hawaii, the laid back atmospheres in San Francisco, Seattle and Portland, the colorful culture in India and most of all, I think about sitting at an outdoor café in Paris, drinking espresso while reading a good book. My travel bucket list grows daily and more than anything, I just want to be an adventurer.

If you are anything like me, you are pretty adept at juggling a lot of things at once. Work, school, homework, final exams, meetings, drama with family and friends — the things that occupy your thoughts overlap each other and drive you just a tad bit insane. Do yourself a favor and get away. As far away as you can go. Take a break from the mundane nine to five-ness of it all. Get with some good people and hit the road. Wander without purpose or reason. Revel in the feeling of being anonymous in a new place. Take enough pictures to fill a suitcase. Write down what you see and how it makes you feel. Talk to new people and learn from them.

When you broaden your horizons and step out of your comfort zone, you will be shocked at what you discover. Through travel, you uncover parts of your identity you never knew you had. These may be strengths or weaknesses that you never saw in yourself, likes and dislikes you didn’t know you had, or talents that you’ve never needed to use before. If you’re not happy with your career or your major, traveling can help you find your passions or rediscover a part of you that was suppressed a long time ago by expectations placed on you by others or even yourself.

Adventure is the best way to grow. Don’t be held back by the voice inside your head telling you that it’s too scary or that it’s too dangerous. Routine is what’s lethal. You have one life to live and it begins at the end of your comfort zone. So make a list of all the beautiful and exciting places you want to explore. Book a ticket and go.

Go be an adventurer.
