The Fourth of July is the one day of the year when you can don your most ridiculous red, white and blue-themed attire…and no one can say anything!  Stripes, stars and, if you really must, American flags, are all fair game on this patriotic holiday.  Before you get too far along in coordinating your outfit, however, you’ll want to keep it tasteful.  The key to pulling off the perfect July 4th ensemble is moderation.  If you flaunt stars and stripes in your look, then make sure to keep your accessories to a minimum.  Similarly, if you’re already wearing a t-shirt with an American flag on it, then you may want to leave your flag-printed jeans at home.  (Can anyone say over-the-top in the worst possible way?)

Whether you’re enjoying a local parade with the fam, hanging out with friends or catching a dazzling fireworks show, it’s completely possible to style an outfit that screams “I love my country” while still managing to appear chic (and only slightly pretentious!).

 The All-American Girl

If you already know that you have a jam-packed day, then effortlessly chic is the way to go!

From an early morning parade to a late night concert series and grand finale fireworks display, you’ll want to be dressed in something that you can maneuver in throughout the day.  Avoid too many unwanted layers by keeping it simple with a lightweight striped tank top and crisp white shorts.  To transition your ensemble from day to night, opt for a sparkly gold clutch, sandals and sweet bracelet.

If the humidity we’ve been having these past few days is any indication for what’s to come, make sure to wear plenty of sunblock and don’t forget your sunnies!

 The Trendsetter

Pick up a pair of red skinny jeans and this Fourth of July, all eyes will be on you!

Red jeans are fierce, bold and simply destined to be worn on July 4th.  That said, skip the stars and stripes and opt instead for a sleeveless button-down blouse.  To fulfill the “something blue” component of your outfit, stick with a tried-and-true pair of ballerinas (they’re unbelievably comfy and ridiculously cute!).

And now for the fun part: costume jewelry!  As the taste-maker that you are, it comes as no surprise that you’re going to let your accessories do the talking.  A gold cuff bracelet, blue stripe link necklace and starfish ring will lend just the right amount of bling to your look.  Pull the entire outfit together with a classy black quilted shoulder bag and you’re more than ready to celebrate Independence Day in style!

The Free-Spirited Bohemian

I never thought I’d say this, but pull a Miley and rock some denim cutoffs!

If your go-to in the summer months is a great pair of stressed or embellished denim shorts, then July 4th should be no exception.  Keep your look simple for the day of festivities ahead by pairing your shorts with a white t-shirt (and lace bandeau underneath if it’s sheer!).  To dress up your look, switch out your everyday flip-flops for an ultra-chic pair of navy blue striped wedges.  For those of you who simply cannot resist incorporating Old Glory into your ensemble, my advice is to do so subtly.  This American flag tote by Lacoste is practical and not obnoxious in the least.  Show your pride for the US of A not only on the Fourth, but also during the rest of the summer!  For the finishing touch, dress up your nails with some crimson red polish.

The Sophisticate

Maybe you’ve been invited to a swanky boating party.  Or perhaps you’re celebrating the Fourth at the National Mall in Washington D.C.  Whatever the occasion, you’ll want to be dressed to the nines!

If you have a navy blue dress tucked away in your closet, then you’re already one step ahead of the game.  With blue being the dominant color in this ensemble, all that’s left to work in are splashes of red and white.  The easiest way to do so is through your shoes and accessories.  An on-trend red leather satchel and a pair of airy white cutout sandals are the epitome of summer chic.  A cute star-shaped ring (how appropriate!) and timeless gold and white enamel bangle will add just the right amount of pizzazz to your look.  No Fourth of July is the same without ultra sparkly red polish and a flat straw hat. Happy Birthday America!

 The Prepster/ Girly-Girl

You love getting dressed up for holidays and themed parties, but still want to look cute…

I’m all about showing love for my country.  I just prefer to do so in a more quiet, understated manner.  Keep your look for the day practical by pairing a navy blue polka dot tank top with a pristine white lace skirt.  For a pop of red, select a charming red crossbody bag to hold all of your daily essentials.  Finally, create your own fireworks with gold stone-embellished T-strap sandals.

Why settle for one outfit when you can have two (one for during the day, one for the night)!?  Moving onto option #2, I present you with an über preppy dress that is more than perfect for the 4th.  Already equipped with red, white and blue Breton-inspired stripes, let the dress do the talking.  Scour your jewelry box for a statement piece (or two) to wear on this extra special day!

Remember, your outfit doesn’t have to be crazy to be eye-catching.  Stay cool, be stylish and have a splendid Fourth of July!
