The dog days of summer are in full swing and summer vacay as we know it is slowly coming to an end. Just because August has officially arrived (where oh where did July go?!) doesn’t mean that you can’t invest in more summer attire.
For all of you budget-savvy fashionistas and summer aficionadas, there is still plenty of time to purchase a good pair of shorts. Odds are those Joe’s shorts that you were eyeing when they first came out in spring might finally be on sale. While you may have the perfect destroyed denim cutoffs, what about one covered in an eccentric print or even a sophisticated pair of lace shorties?
Be creative and expand your wardrobe! Whether the fit is impeccable or the print is simply too cute to pass up, it’s much better to have a few stellar, standout pairs of shorts than a whole closet of bottoms that you may only wear once or twice.
From budget-friendly to splurge-worthy, here are ten must-have shorts to add to your wardrobe today!
1. Jungle Fever
Safari Print Shorts w/Belt- $17.80 (Forever 21)
Kicking off the list, I begin with this adventurous pair of safari print shorts from Forever 21. Complete with a skinny black woven belt, they are sure to look fierce with everything from a pink blouse to a simple white t-shirt. Coming in at less than $18, they’re a steal!
2. Tie-Dye to Die For
Urban Renewal Tie-Dye Jean Short- $39 (now on sale at Urban Outfitters, they were $49!)
It’s no secret that DIY-inspired shorts have been a major trend this summer. From ombre and embellished shorts to tie-dye and distressed options, there’s no scarcity of young, fun and one-of-a-kind designs to go around. Channel your inner hippie and free-spirited persona in these shorts and you’ll be music festival-ready in no time!
3. I Spy Dots…Everywhere!
On the Spot Shorts- $34 (Francesca’s Collections)
While it’s fun to test-drive the latest trends, it’s just as important to invest in tried-and-true wardrobe staples that you can wear from one occasion to the next. Polka dots are timeless and never go out of style (at least in my opinion!). And how do you style these pale blue, white-dotted shorts, you ask? Think of how prim and proper they would be with an ultra-feminine ruffled blouse and classic ballerinas. Better yet, add a major dose of color to your look via a brightly-colored top or lightweight sweater.
4. The LWS (Little White Shorts) of Summer
Neva Shorts- $41 (shopsosie)
We are all familiar with the saying, “No white after Labor Day.” Regardless of whether you believe in this age old myth or not, now’s the quintessential time to rock your white shorts. This pristine pair of high-waisted shorts would look gorgeous with everything from a chevron printed tank top to a cropped lace shirt. Talk about conventional and getting the most bang for your buck!
5. Classic Lilly
Walsh Short- $58 (Lilly Pulitzer)
Summer would not be the same without Lilly Pulitzer’s citrus green, punchy pink and soft yellow hues. If a Lilly dress is too overwhelming for your style, invest in the next best thing: floral-covered shorts! Style them with an equally preppy pair of Jack Rogers sandals or get ready for a night out by throwing on some strappy wedges!
6. Bold and Graphic
3″ Short in Tiki Print- $50 (now on sale at J.Crew, they were $65!)
No shorts roundup would be complete without a pair from J.Crew. End of story. Giving animal print a run for its money, this bold tribal print is more than deserving of a spot in your regular wardrobe rotation. Just the right length (not too short, but not granny-style either!), these will quickly become your go-to pair. Keep it effortless with a loose, oversized t-shirt or take them up a notch with an equally show-stopping blazer (I’m thinking one in an attention-grabbing shade of orange).
7. Dress-Up Shorts
Scalloped Lace Skort- $78 (Free People)
Fashion-forward, slightly boho and unquestionably lovely, lace shorts are a must-have. Whether you prefer these Free People lacies in midnight blue, flamingo pink or classic ivory, just think of the outfit possibilities!
8. “R” is for Ruffles!
Anna Studio Ruffle Tap Shorts- $145 (Pixie Market)
Not a fan of shorts – no problem! If you swoon at the sight of ruffles, lace, bows, and let’s face it– anything ultra-feminine for that matter – then you’ve come to the right place. A true girly-girl knows that denim cutoffs simply won’t do. While this pair of ruffled shorts may not be your prized accordion pleat skirt, it is the next best thing! In a mesmerizing shade of cobalt blue, they’re irresistible.
9. Sequins – Oh, My!
Joe’s Multicolor Sequin 2″ Cut Off Short- $172 (Joe’s)
Why include run-of-the-mill designer denim on my list when I could spotlight one embellished with sequins? If you love sequins as much I do, then you simply must understand where I’m coming from. These multi-colored sequin shorts by Joe’s have “buy-me-now!” written all over them. Wear them with a knotted white t-shirt and an easy-going pair of sandals – just remember to keep it simple and let the sequins shine!
10. Pining for Pineapples
Joie Barnaby Short- $109 (now on sale at Barneys, they were $178!)
Saving my favorite and quite possibly the most adorable for last, I present you with these amazing pineapple printed shorts by Joie. If you have a sweet spot for happy-go-lucky prints (you’re not the only one!), then these are the crème de la crème. Cutesy pineapple print aside, I am also falling for the tangerine-green color palette which can be paired nicely with an emerald green blouse or blazer. This one is definitely going on my want/need/gotta-have-it-now list!
Summer’s not over by a long shot. As you begin your back-to-school shopping, what shorts will you be investing in?
