A hero is someone who has made it on their own, someone who has a strong belief and stands up for it, someone that made a major change towards making history. That someone for me is Coco Chanel. Before she became known as the leading lady of the fashion industry, Chanel was born in France in 1883. She grew up in an orphanage because her mother passed away and her father completely abandoned her. While she was in the orphanage, she learned how to sew. Life wasn’t easy for her but she followed her dreams of one day becoming a clothing designer.
This woman completely changed how women dressed during the 20th century. She wanted to take a break from the corsets and long dresses and try something new. In the 1920’s, women dressed conservatively and were still thought to be less than men. It was Coco Chanel who took her wild ideas of fashion and ran with them. She didn’t care about what people thought or if her styles would be accepted.
Her first design was the little black dress we have all come to know and love. This dress was made using a jersey fabric and paired with pearls, jewels, and lace to turn an ordinary item of clothing into an extraordinary piece of art. Chanel then introduced the now legendary suit in the year 1925, with a collarless jacket and a well fitted skirt. Chanel took elements from men’s wear and emphasized comfort and femininity. She was later highly praised for her women’s business suits, which turned the fashion industry upside down.
She had done something no one else had ever dared to try. Turning clothing designed for men and making it a unisex fashion really made people notice her. Chanel’s emotions, thoughts, and expressions were all displayed in her clothing. In response to the many people who asked about where she got the dress, she offered to make one for them. Coco gained popularity and made clothes for woman. In her shop she just sold hats, but later on that changed and she sold much more.
Once Coco Chanel was on top of the fashion charts, she continued with her creative ideas and expanded her line by adding jewelry. Chanel took her thriving business to new heights by launching her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, which was the first to feature a designer’s name. According to Coco Chanel, “Perfume is the unseen, unforgettable ultimate accessory of fashion that heralds your arrival and prolongs your departure.” Her still-famous Chanel No. 5 perfume has a whole collection line to this day. Coco Chanel paired with Russian-French chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux to create this perfume. “I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year, and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already, it will bring good luck,” said Chanel.
She continued her fashion line even as she grew older inspiring many people to continue making a difference. She showed the world her passion for fashion and wasn’t afraid of failing. Coco Chanel gave women that confidence they needed to change the stereotypical uniform that they used to wear and taught them not to be limited to the way others thought they should look, because the only limit that exists is the one that lay within you. This is why I see Coco Chanel as my hero.
