How Long You’ve Been Blogging: Since November 2010
What made you decide to start blogging?
I was “studying” for a finance exam senior year of college and got a little sidetracked on StumbleUpon. I came across a personal style blog and was totally entranced. I thought, “Hey, I can do this!”
How did you come up with the title “Bows and Sequins”?
I started brainstorming some of my favorite things… leopard print, bows, stripes, polka dots, statement jewelry, sequins, etc. I liked the sound of Bows & Sequins and the domain was available so I jumped on it!
How would you describe your personal style?
Girly, glitzy, casually glam… and constantly evolving!
Where do you get the inspiration for your outfits?
Honestly, everywhere! I spend an hour or two combing through a single magazine. My monthly must-reads are InStyle, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Lucky. I also spend entirely too much time on Pinterest gathering inspiration for everything from outfits to bedroom decor.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
I’m a night owl and stores aren’t open at 1 a.m., so I tend to do the majority of my shopping online. I like to have my space in stores and you can’t always find that with the constant crowds on Michigan Avenue. The stores I frequent the most in Chicago are Nordstrom, Sequin on Armitage, Zara, and H&M.
What’s your favorite thing in your closet?
My favorite item in my closet is BY FAR my By Malene Birger leopard coat that I somehow scored on sale (to the tune of 50% off) at Saks. Best purchase ever!
What are your favorite trends of the moment?
I’m absolutely loving the high-low hemlines right now. I’ve only let myself purchase one skirt so far, but I’m itching for more. Some other favorite trends are pops of neon, pastel pieces, and printed denim. I can’t get enough printed and colored denim!
What are some products you can’t live without?
I won’t walk out the door without applying my Bobbi Brown Under-Eye Concealer! I’m also a big fan of NARS “Laguna” bronzer and “Orgasm” blush.
If you only have time to apply a few makeup products in the morning, which ones do you reach for?
My late night productivity makes for some dark circles in the morning, so I will always reach for my concealer first. Tinted moisturizer (I prefer Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free version), blush, and mascara can do wonders when you are short on time!
Your hair is always either perfectly curly or perfectly straight. Tell us your secret!
My secret is that I am the world’s worst hairstylist and I only know how to do these two things! I’ve been wearing my hair pin-straight since I bought my first flat iron in 7th grade. I’ve just recently been teaching myself how to curl my hair with my curling wand, which I think is 100 times easier to use than a regular curling iron!
What does your typical day look like?
I try to start each morning with a workout and almost every evening is spent on my computer working on Bows & Sequins.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not blogging?
Grabbing dinner and drinks with my friends is one of my absolute favorite things to do! And to counteract those two, I love taking yoga and Pilates classes.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love reading books, hitting the gym, trying out new recipes, and traveling.
What are your favorite foods/drinks?
Breakfast food is my absolute favorite thing to eat, no matter the time of day. Omelettes, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy… you name it! I also love sushi, seafood, Thai, Mexican, and decadent Italian dishes. What can I say? I like to eat.
